The Roman triarii were the third and highest class of heavy infantry in the ancient Roman army. They were considered to be the most experienced and veteran soldiers who had already proven themselves in battle.
Triarii were armed with a long spear called the hasta, a large rectangular shield (scutum), and wore a bronze helmet with a red crest. They were also equipped with a short sword (gladius) and wore a metal suit of armor consisting of breastplate, greaves, and a helmet.
During battle, the triarii would form a defensive line at the rear of the formation in a wedge-shaped formation, known as the Triplex Acies. This formation was used as a last resort, and its purpose was to hold the line and keep the enemy from breaking through.
The Roman triarii were essential to the success of the Roman army. They were highly respected and were always at the ready to defend their people and their land.
